AI content is taking over the internet. Here's what the data says.

A few years ago, "AI-generated content" was a novelty. Today it's the default setting for a huge share of what gets published online: blog posts, product descriptions, social captions, even the faces and voices in ads. The question for a business isn't whether AI content is everywhere. It's what that flood does to the people you're trying to reach.

About half of new articles are now mostly AI-written

The SEO firm Graphite analyzed 65,000 English-language web pages from the Common Crawl archive and ran them through an AI detector. It found that roughly half of new articles published online were primarily AI-generated, a share that has hovered around 50% since late 2024.1 That number only counts articles mostly written by AI. It doesn't include the much larger pile of content that's AI-assisted.

~50%of new articles online are primarily AI-generated, according to Graphite's analysis of 65,000 URLs.1

There's a twist in the same research: when Graphite looked at what actually ranks, 86% of top-ranking Google articles were primarily written by humans.1 More AI content is being made. That doesn't mean more of it is being read.

Consumers are noticing, and pulling back

Gartner has been tracking how U.S. consumers feel about all this, and the 2026 numbers point the same way:

Gartner's own read is useful: AI is increasing the volume of media people see, but not necessarily the value.3

What this means for a local business

When everything starts to look and sound the same, people get better at scrolling past it. Polished, generic, could-be-anyone content is cheap now, and audiences can tell. The thing that hasn't gotten cheaper is the thing AI can't fake: a real customer, in your real space, saying something specific about your business in their own words.

That's not an argument against every use of AI. It's a fine tool behind the scenes. But the content your customers see, the stuff meant to earn their trust, is where real people matter most.
